  • Weekend Highlights

    Three highlights for you.

Number one:  the robin’s nest has eggs in it!  I can see three from my vantage point (but I can’t get them all in a picture).

Number two:  Book club Friday night.  We discussed this book:

Number three:  I heard this author speak.  She was engaging, compelling, funny, earnest.  Several months ago I read her first book (also for my book club).  I own her second book, but have not yet had the opportunity to read it.

She spoke at a beautiful country church.  I wish I had taken my camera along to get pictures of it.  The inside was recently remodeled to bring it back to it’s origins (it was built in 1875) and Swedish heritage.  Here is a picture of the exterior that I found on the church website:

A weekend lowlight:  it snowed again on Saturday.  I didn’t take pictures.  I have enough pictures of snow.  I want to take pictures of FLOWERS!

  • This late April snow is ridiculous. We had little white bloodroot blooms in the ditches last week… now it is little white blooms of ice. Blech! Otherwise it sounds like a lovely weekend. I am jealous really, I can’t find a book club for miles here.

  • @MooncatBlue -  You could do what I did — start your own!  Actually, I didn’t do it by myself.  Two of my neighbors and I started it together.  We each asked two friends, and we all got together for the first time 3 years ago and talked about what we wanted from a book club (what kinds of books we were interested in, how often to meet, how to spread the responsibility around etc.)  Once we had the ground rules down, we were off and running.  We ended up with 8 members total, and we have all stuck with it so far.  We all look forward to book club night, it is sort of a “sacred” obligation that everyone does their best to make time for.  It is an interesting mix of women.  We are a range of ages (from early 30′s to mid 50′s) so we are also at different stages of life.  We have different backgrounds, different professions (teachers, realtors, business women, stay-at-home moms), different family structures and so on — but we have developed a great friendship and rapport with each other.

  • You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actual robin’s egg in person.Oh and I just thought I’d mention that your xanga name reminds me of that one hit song back in the day, “Mambo Number 5″ by some dude I forgot the name of.

  • Oh, robins are great fun to watch.  Last year I had a great vantage point, since the robins built a nest in a covered platform feeder, practically at eye level.  They were really great about letting me look at the babies, too; they never seemed to get upset, although they were pretty rambuctious at driving off other birds and squirrels.  It is amazing how quickly the babies fledged!I am really sorry to hear that you had more snow.  There have been many years where we have had snow, ice, or really bad frosts at the worst possible time.  This is the first Spring I can remember, for many years back, that has allowed us to see everything blooming unscathed.  And wouldn’t you know it, we do have a chance for frost the next couple of nights!

  • At least the snow was gone by Saturday afternoon.  Like you, I have enough snow pictures.I’m so excited you can see eggs in the nest.  It will be fun to watch them hatch and develop.  Please keep us up to date.
