Little Big Time
Well, if you spend any time on Xanga at all you know that recently one of the Xanga-lebrities (Amandasbiggestfan, if you must know, but how could you not?) was giving away a lifetime membership to celebrate being the first (?) to accumulate 100,000 Xanga credits. Said Xanga-lebrity even posted about HOW to accomplish this unbelievable feat in less than a lifetime, which is about how long it would take me to do it. I applaud people who put the time and effort into their blogs and earn tons of credit, I just don’t happen to be one of those folks. I put effort into this blog, but it’s just a corner of my life. A tiny one, really. I don’t ever hope to (or care to) achieve celebrity status on Xanga — or anywhere for that matter. Now, all that being said, I have to admit a teensy amount of pleasure at having FINALLY passed the 1000 mark (that’s right, 10 to the power of 3) in terms of Xanga credits. I didn’t take any shortcuts to get there. I just posted to my blog and made real, genuine comments on other people’s blogs (after a thorough reading of the post, of course!). I even “spend” credits to give minis on a regular basis. I spend almost as much as I earn — some days I go backwards in my credit total because of this (hmmm, that sounds an awful lot like real life). Okay — I did welcome a few newbies using the welcome wagon feature, which earned me a few extra credits, but only those people who took the time to make a REAL first post — and again, it was a REAL comment that I left — not something generic that I copied and pasted into the comment box. Call me an elitist, if you will, but I am feeling like I have earned the right to feel a little bit pleased with myself.
It’s not the “bigtime” – I’m small potatos and I know it. But that’s okay. Potatos aren’t my favorite vegetable anyway.
(Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read my posts and comment on them. I really appreciate you!)

There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to be a celebrity – we all blog here for different reasons – i use it mostly to sort out my feelings being “borderline” and i always appreciate the comments i get from everyone – for the most part they help a lot… do i want to be a xanga-celebrity – sure!!!! but that’s cuz i love being the center of attention lol – i’m a self-admitted narcisist – i’m an actress and feed on attention and relish accolades but that’s just me – i like reading your posts and try and comment when the mood strikes me !!!!
@theatrestarr - I always appreciate it when you comment, and you do so often! I can also tell that you read my posts and put thought into your responses. Thanks alot! You are right, we are all here for different reasons, and of course I know that. And I DO like attention, but being the CENTER of attention makes me uncomfortable. That’s why I like being part of a group — like my chorale. I can be a part of something creative and beautiful, without having the attention focused solely on me. The anonimity of Xanga makes attention a little less glaring, but then, I don’t know that for sure since I mostly only get a handful of comments per day.
I hadn’t heard about this xanga-lebrity and to tell the truth I don’t know how many credits I have. I’m going to go check that right now! I hardly ever look at the xanga homepage. I just like being able to write stuff about my life, and some of my family members keep up with us that way, plus the little community of friends I have made here.
Ok, duh, it is right here under this box, I have 2,334 credits. See, now that you have brought it up I am going to notice it more! I want to be a celebrity, ha!
@BluebirdChris - You are already a celebrity to me! Thanks for the mini
.
I had no idea there was such a status in the blog world. HA! I have no idea about credits either–how they work, etc. I’ve discovered that there are people who spend hours and hours in the blogging communities. I can’t relate at all. I enjoy blogging, but, as you say, it’s a tiny part of my life.
Wow, I just joined Xanga and I thought credits were easy to get. I guess there are some “perks” for being the new kid on the block. Good luck!
Sad to admit, but I have no idea what you are talking about. I guess that’s because I’m not from Xangaland.
In my neck of the woods of Blogger (or Blogspot) land, I use my counter to get my fill of attention. It’s fun to go “inside” and see who those numbers represent. Repeats and international visits are fun to study.
So, is there anything I can do to help you earn credits faster?
Have you tried any of the “surveys”? I did, when they first came up with that, but lately I never qualify. That’s too bad, because I really thought I’d be able to get enough for lifetime within, well, my lifetime, but apparently that’s probably not going to happen. And I hate feeling as though I am hoarding credits!
Good luck!
Here’s how clueless I am: I didn’t even know there ARE Xanga-lebrities. The blogs I choose to read always seem to be blogs like my own, that average 3 – 10 comments, or so, per post. Every once in a while I randomly run across a blog that has 180 comments on a particular post, and often I’m left asking myself, “why???” I’ve always figured they just know a lot of people in the real world who feel like commenting on their site. It never occurred to me that they might be Xanga-lebrities.
I’ve also been mystified by this whole new “credit” system, which seems completely useless to me. I did not know one could get Premium with 100,000 credits. Now that I know, I must say, I’d rather write a check. I have 723 credits. I imagine I’ll be 10,000 years old before I have 100,000 credits. The good news is, I’ll be 10,000 years old…MUCH more impressive than being a Xanga-lebrity.
@ordinarybutloud - I probably wouldn’t have known, but one of my Xanga “friends” was in the running to get the free lifetime subscription. It was run kind-of like “American Idol” — there were a bunch of blogs nominated, and several “elimination” rounds, with judges. When it got down to the final 8, you could vote for your favorite. It was all very interesting, and if my friend had not been one of those nominated, I probably wouldn’t have known either.
@suzyQ_darnit - No I haven’t done any surveys. As a rule, surveys bug me. It’s so hard for me to chose from the answers that surveys limit me to. I always want to go into a long detailed explanation, or qualify my answer in some way. The choices provided never seem adequate! LOL!
My “real life” friends think blogging is weird. I don’t even mention it anymore. I don’t know why it is odder than any other hobby.
I started on Xanga because my son had a site and I wanted to keep an eye on him. Guess what? I found other people I enjoyed getting to know. I decided that Xanga would be my diary. I try to keep track of what is happening with my family. I like looking back over the years. I started in November 2003. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go but I have many friends that I have known for years.
I don’t ever think I could handle hundreds of Xanga pals.
I’ve almost always had premium. Really $25 a year on a daily hobby is pretty cheap. I finally went ahead and bought lifetime. I received quite a few credits when I bought lifetime. I don’t really pay that much attention to the credits.
I saw your comment a few days ago about Issac. I’m glad you showed him the positive comments.
Take care and have a great day!
lol, I’m with you. You are higher in status than me, I’m positive I haven’t hit 900 yet. Congrats on 1K, I think you should be elitist and proud. I hate generic comments but may be guilty of leaving them from time to time… That’s why I comment less tho than I’d like because I don’t have the time to put all my focus in a blog that I read.
BTW: I don’t want to be a celebrity, but I do want to be recognized one day.
it’s great what you are doing. i love your perspective of not trying to achieve fame but to, instead, use thing as a haven for your thoughts.
